We just moved into a new house and unfortunately the water heater for the house was routed so that the kitchen sink was the last place in the house to get hot water. It would take at least 3 minutes for the hot water to reach the sink. With the new Thermomate point of use 2.5 gal mini tank water heater, I now have hot water in 3 to 5 SECONDS. It is incredible and makes me so happy. It is the little things in life! I love it.
I purchased this compact hot water tank for installation in the kitchen of a camper I'm building in a RAM ProMaster van. It was very easy to install and it heats up quicker than I anticipated it would. The water temperature appears to be just what I need for kitchen use. Because it is currently winter, I haven't yet had an opportunity to use it on a trip , but the ease of installation meant that it was simple to disconnect and bring into the house for the winter to prevent it from freezing.
I wanted a small, easy to install, water heater to fit under my kitchen sink to eliminate waiting several minutes for the hot water to reach the kitchen from the main 50 gallon tank located on the opposite side of the house. I considered going with the circulating pump, but that looked like a much bigger project. I did not need a large capacity tank, just enough "instant" hot water to fill the dish pan. The 1.5 gallon size looked ideal, plus the size dimensions fit the space available. After looking at several models and reading all the reviews I selected the Thermomate Mini Tank Electric water heater 1.5 gallons, based on price, quality, and the ability to service the internal components if needed. When I unpacked the unit I was immediately impressed with quality, feel, and appearance of the unit. I had read reviews of some of the other brands of mini tanks having problems with leaking connections. I had no problems at all, and the installation took less than an hour. The tank has 1/2" NPT nipples for both hot and cold. My existing faucet had a 3/8" OD fitting connected to the hot water supply line. I went to Home Depot and bought a new 16" long standard steel faucet hose with 1/2" FIP connection on one end and 3/8" OD connection on the other end. I connected the 1/2"FIP end to the "Cold Water" inlet nipple of the Mini Tank. No teflon tape or anything needed on the 1/2"NPT nipple. The 3/8" OD end of the hose connected to the hot water supply valve. For the "Hot Water" outlet side of the tank I bought a 12" long standard steel faucet hose with 1/2" FIP on one end and 3/8" OD on the other end. I connected the 1/2" FIP end to the 1/2" NPT nipple on the "Hot Water" side of the tank (no teflon tape), and bought a 3/8" OD male x 3/8" OD male connector to connect hot water outlet hose to the existing 3/8"OD hose from the hot water side of my faucet. With the water heater tank still unplugged, I turned the hot water supply valve on and opened the faucet to allow the Mini Tank to fill up and clear any crud from inside the tank (it looked crystal clear from the start). After a minute or two I shut the faucet off and checked all the connections ..... no leaks!!I plugged the unit into a Sengled WiFi Smart outlet so I can keep the power off when not needed. I set the temperature dial to 125 degrees and the Red power light came on. The light went out after about 10 minutes and I was pleased to find I had hot water as soon as I turned on my faucet!!I still need to connect the Pressure Relief Valve discharge port to the drain line. I plan to connect it to the drain line from the dishwasher. So far I couldn't be more pleased with the unit, the ease of installation, and simple operation. Hopefully it will give me several years of trouble free service.
I put this water heater under the sink in my outdoor kitchen. I was hoping to leave it at a very low setting to get warm water, but it appears to need to be on setting 2 (not 1) for me to be able to detect the difference between cold and hot water in my sink. Mind you - it has been hot here in Southern California, and I do notice more of a difference in the cool evenings. I contacted the seller, and they seemed open to an exchange, so I've decided to keep it. It's good enough for my bbq.
Very impressed with the build quality. The tank heats quickly and the temperature adjustment is easy to use. Perfect solution for a point-of-use application.
Installed this under my kitchen sink and it works perfectly. I get hot water almost instantly now instead of waiting for the main water heater. Installation was simple and it plugged right into a standard outlet.
I very rarely rate anything "5 star", just cynical by nature. However, the tech support staff won me over as they answered my queue before I finished installation!
The owners manual is in error as to how to access the High Temp Cutout reset button as it says to remove the bottom cover. Bottom cover is NOT removable.
They knew that this switch is integral to the temperature control knob and even sent a picture which I could see how to access the reset button!
My response below (if there's room?):
"That you for the prompt reply!!
I had decided to go ahead and install my water heater thinking there was little probability of having a problem with a brand new unit till I could get the thermal overload reset button location resolved? The friend helping me install the unit hadn’t even left the premises when I received your email update! With his experience the total installation time was about 40 minutes. If I hadn’t been bugging him I’m sure he could have trimmed off at least another 5 minutes. I had the role of tool runner but he knew what he needed to start with and I was just relegated to turning on and off the water so he didn’t have to get up off of the floor! With your great customer service and his satisfaction with the manufacturing of the water heater, we both were impressed with the heater itself and he mentioned the possibility of installing one of your tankless units in our churches kitchen as the problem there is inadequate supply of hot water whenever we have a big meal.
Accolades to your customer service section!
The below picture said it all!

"Hi Doug,
You need to remove the front cover to access the reset button:

Just what we needed (main hot water tank is a long way from this kitchen so it takes a long time to get hot water to the tap and dishwasher). This solves that problem. Just organize your connections and space under the sink - and now we have hot water without having to wait.
Package arrived quickly and in good order. Installation was simple. This replaced previous tank that was well over ten years old. So far this new one works great.
The heater worked perfectly after I installed it myself under the kitchen sink as our furnace and water heater are on the other side of the house and this heater was needed.
The installation was very simple and the instructions were easy to understand. I've had it for a month now and get hot water instantly in the tap as compared to waiting for around 5 minutes to get hot water and not to forget the water wasted in the pipes after the water was turned off.
easy to connect. works well so far. question is how long will it last. and the instructions on how to maintain the heating element are not clear. it would be nice to have a step-by-step guide on the processes of getting to the heating element.
Had a kitchen sink very far from my 30 gal water heater. It took a couple of minutes to get the hot water there.. Hooked the hot water from my 30 gal to the hot side of this mini heater the the hot supply to the sink.. nice app
I installed this in a cargo trailer that I have converted into a toy hauler. Cannot believe that my wife and I can each take a shower and not run out of hot water. About the only thing I would change is that I would put a drain in the bottom. This is only a minor problem because it is light enough to pull out of the camper and drain for winter.
It takes about 2 minutes for the tankless to get hot water to the sink, we were always washing our hands in cold water. Now the 4 gal tank is under the sink and hot water is there instantly. The wife is happy and now wants one in the bathroom.
The kitchen sink in our bungalow is roughly 50 feet from the water heater. It took most of a minute to get truly hot water to the sink. It was frustrating and very wasteful. I thought of buying one of these heaters but thought they were too expensive. But I finally bought a 2.5 gallon unit and it has been a life changer! It took me a while to figure out the right plumbing adapters (the instructions weren't very specific) and to install a dedicated power outlet but it was all worth it. After one month it is still working perfectly and I'm very pleased with this purchase!
The 1.3 gallons is a little small for use for the kitchen sink, but its all that would fit in my cabinet. The water starts off hot (instead of cold, so that's a plus), and lasts long enough for a few dishes. It does get lukewarm after that as the cold water enters its tank, and if you keep using it the hot water from the main water heater eventually takes over. Another strategy is to wash a few dishes, rinse a few, turn the water off, and repeat.
Like many reviewers, I used this under the kitchen sink to get much faster hot water to the sink (and not waste a gallon or two). It worked great. I measured the power consumption over time and found that it averages about 32 watts over time. If you used more water, your average power consumption will be higher. My only complaint is that the pipe threads were not cleaned up. They had some kind of scale (other reviewers noted this). I had to tighten the 1/2 inch FIP fitting a little tighter than I thought I might. That's a problem because those fittings leak if they're too tight as well! My advice, tighten to hand tight and another 1/2 turn with a wrench. Then turn on the pressure and tighten to stop the leaks.
Wife complained for years about waiting 2 - 3 minutes for hot water in the kitchen sink due to distance from the hot water heater.Installed the Thermomate mini-tank heater under the sink which provides near instant hot water and maintains heat until hot water from the primary hot water heater arrives. Not difficult to install and had no need for Tech Support.Happy Wife, happy life!
