I purchased this compact hot water tank for installation in the kitchen of a camper I'm building in a RAM ProMaster van. It was very easy to install and it heats up quicker than I anticipated it would. The water temperature appears to be just what I need for kitchen use. Because it is currently winter, I haven't yet had an opportunity to use it on a trip , but the ease of installation meant that it was simple to disconnect and bring into the house for the winter to prevent it from freezing.
I wanted a small, easy to install, water heater to fit under my kitchen sink to eliminate waiting several minutes for the hot water to reach the kitchen from the main 50 gallon tank located on the opposite side of the house. I considered going with the circulating pump, but that looked like a much bigger project. I did not need a large capacity tank, just enough "instant" hot water to fill the dish pan. The 1.5 gallon size looked ideal, plus the size dimensions fit the space available. After looking at several models and reading all the reviews I selected the Thermomate Mini Tank Electric water heater 1.5 gallons, based on price, quality, and the ability to service the internal components if needed. When I unpacked the unit I was immediately impressed with quality, feel, and appearance of the unit. I had read reviews of some of the other brands of mini tanks having problems with leaking connections. I had no problems at all, and the installation took less than an hour. The tank has 1/2" NPT nipples for both hot and cold. My existing faucet had a 3/8" OD fitting connected to the hot water supply line. I went to Home Depot and bought a new 16" long standard steel faucet hose with 1/2" FIP connection on one end and 3/8" OD connection on the other end. I connected the 1/2"FIP end to the "Cold Water" inlet nipple of the Mini Tank. No teflon tape or anything needed on the 1/2"NPT nipple. The 3/8" OD end of the hose connected to the hot water supply valve. For the "Hot Water" outlet side of the tank I bought a 12" long standard steel faucet hose with 1/2" FIP on one end and 3/8" OD on the other end. I connected the 1/2" FIP end to the 1/2" NPT nipple on the "Hot Water" side of the tank (no teflon tape), and bought a 3/8" OD male x 3/8" OD male connector to connect hot water outlet hose to the existing 3/8"OD hose from the hot water side of my faucet. With the water heater tank still unplugged, I turned the hot water supply valve on and opened the faucet to allow the Mini Tank to fill up and clear any crud from inside the tank (it looked crystal clear from the start). After a minute or two I shut the faucet off and checked all the connections ..... no leaks!!I plugged the unit into a Sengled WiFi Smart outlet so I can keep the power off when not needed. I set the temperature dial to 125 degrees and the Red power light came on. The light went out after about 10 minutes and I was pleased to find I had hot water as soon as I turned on my faucet!!I still need to connect the Pressure Relief Valve discharge port to the drain line. I plan to connect it to the drain line from the dishwasher. So far I couldn't be more pleased with the unit, the ease of installation, and simple operation. Hopefully it will give me several years of trouble free service.
I put this water heater under the sink in my outdoor kitchen. I was hoping to leave it at a very low setting to get warm water, but it appears to need to be on setting 2 (not 1) for me to be able to detect the difference between cold and hot water in my sink. Mind you - it has been hot here in Southern California, and I do notice more of a difference in the cool evenings. I contacted the seller, and they seemed open to an exchange, so I've decided to keep it. It's good enough for my bbq.
Delivery was fast and efficient.
Setup was smooth. All components were included; and installation instructions were “spot on”. After electrical was complete; successful HOT water ( almost ) immediately!
All in all, a perfect system for my under sink unit.
BTW: WIFE IS ON CLOUD 9!!!
We have the 4 gallon water heater in our semi-off grid cabin. The unit is compact and mounts on a wall bracket. It works well and recovers quickly. Money well spent.
Easy install. Directions are precise. Had som issues with minor leaks at first with using Teflon tape. Took it back apart and used automotive gasket sealer paste and was successfully installed with no leaks. Heats as it should. Would definitely recommend this purchase. Last one lasted 12yrs. If this one lasts as long would definitely purchase again.
We love having this under the kitchen sink. This heater works as described. We recommend these heaters to anyone in the market. You will not be disappointed.
Had a kitchen sink very far from my 30 gal water heater. It took a couple of minutes to get the hot water there.. Hooked the hot water from my 30 gal to the hot side of this mini heater the the hot supply to the sink.. nice app
I installed this in a cargo trailer that I have converted into a toy hauler. Cannot believe that my wife and I can each take a shower and not run out of hot water. About the only thing I would change is that I would put a drain in the bottom. This is only a minor problem because it is light enough to pull out of the camper and drain for winter.
It takes about 2 minutes for the tankless to get hot water to the sink, we were always washing our hands in cold water. Now the 4 gal tank is under the sink and hot water is there instantly. The wife is happy and now wants one in the bathroom.
The kitchen sink in our bungalow is roughly 50 feet from the water heater. It took most of a minute to get truly hot water to the sink. It was frustrating and very wasteful. I thought of buying one of these heaters but thought they were too expensive. But I finally bought a 2.5 gallon unit and it has been a life changer! It took me a while to figure out the right plumbing adapters (the instructions weren't very specific) and to install a dedicated power outlet but it was all worth it. After one month it is still working perfectly and I'm very pleased with this purchase!
The 1.3 gallons is a little small for use for the kitchen sink, but its all that would fit in my cabinet. The water starts off hot (instead of cold, so that's a plus), and lasts long enough for a few dishes. It does get lukewarm after that as the cold water enters its tank, and if you keep using it the hot water from the main water heater eventually takes over. Another strategy is to wash a few dishes, rinse a few, turn the water off, and repeat.
Like many reviewers, I used this under the kitchen sink to get much faster hot water to the sink (and not waste a gallon or two). It worked great. I measured the power consumption over time and found that it averages about 32 watts over time. If you used more water, your average power consumption will be higher. My only complaint is that the pipe threads were not cleaned up. They had some kind of scale (other reviewers noted this). I had to tighten the 1/2 inch FIP fitting a little tighter than I thought I might. That's a problem because those fittings leak if they're too tight as well! My advice, tighten to hand tight and another 1/2 turn with a wrench. Then turn on the pressure and tighten to stop the leaks.
I have installed many hot water tanks, elec. and gas, this one had it's share of tech challenges. The tank it self was the easiest part of the install, the location under the sink was tight, and installing a new outlet under the sink was the challenge. But all in all, this was a very easy install and you know the saying, "if momma is happy, everyone is happy". Not having to wait for hot water at the bathroom sink has really made things nice.
Wife complained for years about waiting 2 - 3 minutes for hot water in the kitchen sink due to distance from the hot water heater.Installed the Thermomate mini-tank heater under the sink which provides near instant hot water and maintains heat until hot water from the primary hot water heater arrives. Not difficult to install and had no need for Tech Support.Happy Wife, happy life!
This heater takes 0.45 KWH to heat one tank (2.5 gallons) from 60F to 135F. As a standby heater, it takes 0.35 KWH to hold the tank at ~130F (at 50 degree F ambient) for 24 hours. I'll probably wrap the heater in fiberglass insulation to improve that a bit. The heater takes 11.2 Amps when running. If this heater has to share a circuit with another high-current device (such as a hair dryer), the circuit should be at least 20A. You shouldn't even try to run a 1000W electric space heater on the same circuit as this! The only complaints are that the IN/OUT fittings are plastic, which are good for thermal insulation, but you must take care not to over-tighten. Also, the hysteresis (differential) of the mechanical thermostat is too high. When set to 135 degrees (only the 125 degree point is marked), the tank can cool to 120 degrees before the heater restarts. And the tank warranty is only 3 years instead of the usual 6-10 years. You must put a pan with a drain and a leak sensor under this one! I found no provision for changing an anode - if it even has one.Overall, this is a good choice for point-of-use in places where the hot water takes too long to get from the main heater, and you don't want to rewire the building for a real tankless type, or when you have a sink-only room and have no other source of hot water.
I bought this one to replace a Bosch heater that was leaking after a couple of years. Actually, had two Bosch under-counter heaters... both which started leaking (from the tank), so I'm avoiding that brand going forward. So far, this one has been working fine. The installation is a little more involved. YOU actually have to install the hot and cold taps on the top of the heater (doesn't come pre-installed) and the connections must be turned EXTREMELY tight to avoid leaks. I thought I had done so the first time only to find a small leak occurred later. A little more elbow grease and the leak stopped.Other than that... it's been working as expected.
